At 1:16 p.m. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon walked in the doors of Lafayette High School to continue his tour of four Missouri high schools that participate in the state’s A+ Program.
After already visiting Russellville High School located just outside Kirksville, MO, Governor Nixon arrived at Lafayette 30 minutes later than the expected arrival time. He was originally scheduled be greeted at 12:45 p.m., but an early morning car accident in Kirksville delayed his schedule.
After being greeted at the Welcome Center by Rockwood representatives and Lafayette administrators, Nixon along with his wife Georganne had a brief visit in Principal John Shaughnessy’s office before beginning a brief building tour.
During Nixon’s tour he first visited 2010 Teacher of the Year math teacher Danna Phillips’s classroom. Both Nixon and his wife interacted with students and also spoke briefly about the importance of teaching profession.
Next, Principal Shaughnessy lead Nixon to social studies teacher Steve Klawiter’s AP US History class. During his time with the class Nixon talked with A+ Program student senior Dexter Parris, asking him about how he has benefited from the program.
Lastly before his press conference in the library, Nixon visited social studies teacher Brittany Trotts’s Contemporary Issues class. The students were allowed to ask the Nixon questions ranging from what it was like being Governor of Missouri to if he follows any particular sports teams.
Nixon’s time at Lafayette concluded with a press conference in the newly renovated Library where all located media was invited. He made a statement about the importance of the 37 Missouri high schools that have achieved the A+ Program status. After Nixon opened the floor to quesitons he concluded his visit by meeting with Lafayette Renaissance sponsors and talking with Rockwood representatives and local media.
Shaughnessy said, “I think it was an overall great visit and very enjoyable for all involved. Governor Nixon and his wife were extremely personable. It was fun to show off our school and highlight all the great things we are doing at Lafayette.”
