With 1:35 left in the 4th quarter, Lafayette held just an eight point lead over Marquette in the district final, before junior Brady Micek hit a three to halt the Mustang’s momentum.
The three was a part of Micek’s 22 point performance which helped the Lancers win their first district championship in eight years. The Class 6 District 2 final took place between Lafayette and Marquette at Kirkwood High School and was a high scoring, physical affair that the Lancers won 76-65, on March 11.
Although the final score was closer, the game didn’t start that way, as Lafayette jumped to a dominant 37-12 lead by halftime.
Both teams committed many fouls throughout the game, but the Mustangs failed to capitalize on them in the first half, missing multiple big opportunities.
This changed in the second half as Marquette attempted a comeback scoring 54 points, many of them coming from free throws. The comeback was spearheaded by junior Brody Owens who went 16 for 18 on free throws and put up 21 overall points in the game to bring him to 1000 career high school points.
Despite Marquette’s high scoring offense in the second half, Lafayette managed to keep up with them, never trailing the Mustangs all game.
The Lancers now move on to the Class 6 State tournament, where they will play the District 1 champions, SLUH on Friday, March 14.
