During their conference opener against Rockwood Summit, sophomore goalie Peter Tomaras faced 33 shots yet only allowed one goal, helping the Lafayette hockey team secure a tie.
“I think I played really good, I had a great team in front of me,” Tomaras said. “I bailed [my teammates] out a couple times, and they bailed me out a couple of times as well.”
The Lancers opened Suburban Conference play with a 1-1 draw against their rivals, the Falcons at Queeny Park Ice Rink, Nov. 3.
Summit started the game quickly, as sophomore forward Blake Warren scored, making the score 1-0, less than three minutes into the game.
During a Lafayette power play, junior defenseman Quentin Parks attempted a long range shot, which was deflected into the goal, tying up the game.
Following the goal, both teams had multiple scoring opportunities, but failed to convert. During second period, the Falcons shot 17 times, but Tomaras and the Lancer defense held strong, even as Lafayette faced a power play when sophomore Luke Ross got called for holding.
Parks nearly found a winner late in the third, but senior Summit goalie Russell Kempf made a crucial save, keeping the game level.
“Tonight was fantastic … Everybody on this bench contributed today, everybody worked [hard] and played to the best of their ability,” Coach Jim Carrico said.
Lafayette and Rockwood Summit play again on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Maryville University Hockey Center.
