Standing on the Lafayette 25-yard line, the senior quarterback for Christian Brothers College, Nick McClellan attempted a pass, but was tackled by multiple defenders. The ball popped out for senior linemen Baron James who quickly recovered the fumble and returned it for a 75-yard touchdown, giving the Lancers an early second quarter lead in the Class 6 District 2 championship game, 14-7.
James’ touchdown was just one of 20 touchdowns scored in the district championship match up, as the Cadets won 77-62.
Heading into the game, both teams were undefeated and ranked as some of the best teams in the state of Missouri.
Initially the game started slow, and by the end of the first quarter, CBC led 7-0 after a five yard rushing touchdown by senior running back Victor Williams.
Lafayette responded early in the second quarter, when junior running back Cody Keen had a one yard rushing touchdown.
On the following drive, the Lancer defense held strong, as they forced a turnover and James scored the touchdown.
Following this play, the game opened up and both teams struggled to get a stop on defense. By halftime, the game was tied at 34-34.
During this flurry of touchdowns, there were three back-to-back touchdown plays. It started when senior quarterback Brady Micek found senior wide receiver Zachary Toben for a 20 yard passing touchdown.
On the following kickoff, Williams would take the kick for 92 yards, and scored a touchdown, to tie the game at 21-21.
Then to give the lead back to Lafayette, senior kick returner Timothy Washington returned CBC’s kickoff for a 93 yard touchdown, making the score 28-21.
The Cadets opened the third quarter strong, scoring two unanswered touchdowns early, and getting numerous stops on defense.
Washington kept the Lancers alive though, when Micek found him for an 18 yard receiving touchdown. This made the score 55-40, after a missed PAT.
From there, the two teams continued trading touchdowns, but CBC retained their two touchdown lead, as the Lafayette defense failed to get a stop.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Cadets took a 77-56 lead over the Lancers, essentially ending the game, but Lafayette added one last touchdown on the last play of the game, as Micek threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Toben.
During the game, Micek threw 58 passes, completing 30 of them, for 359 yards and four touchdown passes. His favorite receivers were Toben and Washington, with both having over 100 receiving yards.
Toben led the team in receiving yards with 153 yards on 10 receptions. Washington had 233 total yards and scored the total touchdowns.
Despite a loss, the game capped off an impressive season for first year head coach Kurt Mueller, as Lafayette went undefeated in the regular season, and dominated on both sides of the ball, as they failed to score less than 28 points in any game all season, and allowed an average of 15.5 points per game.
On the season, Micek threw for 2522 yards, 31 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. Keen was the team’s main running back as he rushed for 782 yards and scored 18 total touchdowns, leading the team.
Washington had impressive performance on both sides of the ball, leading the team in receiving yards with 968 yards, and also leading the team in interceptions with 5 picks. James had 8 sacks and 11 tackles for loss on the season, leading the team in both categories.
“Our seniors really led our whole team and set the foundation of everything we want to be,” Mueller said. “And now we’re trying to raise the level to what our seniors did this year.”
