Boys Basketball

Last week, the Lancers took on the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. In the first round on Dec. 27, the Lancers lost to Columbia Hickman with a final score of 69-53 with 21 of those points coming from senior Matt Jones. With a loss in the first round, the Lancers were able to make a comeback on Dec. 28 against McCluer North with a score of 82-53. In the final round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, the Lancers were defeated by Lindbergh by a final score of 47-41. Junior Matt Haefner scored 17 points in this game. The Lancers take on Kirkwood at home on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. and Rockwood Summit on Jan. 7 at 8 p.m.

Girls Basketball

On Dec. 27 the Lady Lancers suffered a loss against the Pattonville Pirates 63-33 in the Don Maurer Invitational at MICDS. Following the loss, on Dec. 28, the team beat the Clayton Greyhounds, 51-46, in the consolation semifinal of the Don Maurer Invitational at MICDS, with senior Ana McClellan leading the team with 13 points. To close out 2021, the team lost to the Kirkwood Pioneers 42-39 in the tournament. McClellan once again lead the team with 24 points scored during the game.  On Jan. 4, the Lady Lancers take on the Kirkwood Pioneers at Kirkwood High School at 6 p.m.

Hockey

Over the break, the Lancers had two games. They lost a tough game against Chaminade on Dec. 27, 3-2, with the only goals being scored by junior Andrew Knapp and sophomore Drew Robinson. Despite the loss, the Lancers bounced back with a stunning 3-3 tie against the Marquette Mustangs in the annual Silver Skate game on Jan. 1. The Lancers started off strong with two goals in the first period by junior Spencer Xu and sophomore Greyson Eble but were unable to fend off three goals by Marquette over the course of the game. However, in the last few seconds of the game, Knapp scored the game-tying goal, allowing the Lancers to keep the trophy for another year. Even before the game, Knapp knew the Silver Skate was an important game to the team and their fans, and he was happy to be able to compete. “Knowing it’s against our biggest rivals, it is always a night we get to play in front of the largest crowd of the year and compete for the trophy itself,” he said. “The only thing I was thinking before the goal was to get the puck on the net. I knew in the back of my head the clock was getting to its final seconds. Luckily, I got a fortunate bounce. With that goal, I was happy to keep Marquette from winning the game.” Knapp and the Lancers will play their next game on Jan. 3 against Francis Howell.

Boys Wrestling

On Dec. 30, the Lancers finished in third place in the Red Schmitt Holiday Tournament in Granite City with an overall team score of 269.5. Senior Tommy Hagan was a champion in the 220-pound weight class and senior Drew Doehring came in second place in the 138-pound weight class. The Lancers compete next in the Lafayette Fred Ross Invitational on Jan. 8 at 8:30 a.m.

Girls Wrestling

On Dec. 30, the Lancers competed in the Wonder Woman Tournament in Columbia, MO. The team finished in seventh place out of the 79 teams that competed. Senior Faith Cole, who won her match with a major decision over her opponent, was deemed the overall champion, with senior Seraphina Blackmon in second place and junior Jayla Jones in sixth place. “It was a great tournament and it was quite exciting to be involved in such a large tournament inside of the high school season. I wrestled great and so did the team even though we were short-handed because of some sickness going around. I am hoping to come home with an individual state championship and a team championship as well,” Cole said. The team will be taking on Eureka on Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. in Eureka High School in gym number two.
