With a 3-2 loss to Eureka, their second to the Wildcats this season, the Lady Lancers now sit at a 9-8 overall record. The Lancers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the in the third inning on a double by freshman Maddie Seifert, but let the Conference matchup slip by giving up two runs in the fifth and the game-winner in the sixth.
“I think we’re still doing good even with the loss,” senior Sarah Martinez said, “We just have some things to work on.”
Things came undone for the Lancers in the fifth inning when a Eureka’s Allie Craft scored on a throwing error by senior catcher Kourtney Mueller and Jessica Poore drove in another with a bloop single. The deciding run came in the sixth when Eureka’s Alana Hester led off with a single and was driven in by Jamie Fowle.
In the bottom of the sixth, had a chance to tie it when Martinez was thrown at home on a fine defensive by Fowle.
Seifert started on the mound for Lafayette and kept the sixth-ranked Wildcats quiet for the most part until the pivotal fifth inning.
Despite the loss, Martinez says the team is not worried about possibly having to face Eureka in postseason play.
“It’s hard to beat a team three times,” she said.
