What’s next?

With the Rams gone what is next for professional sports in St. Louis

“He’s a bad man,” said Jacob Freidhoff, senior, when asked about NFL owner Stan Kroenke and his move of the Rams from St. Louis to Los Angeles.

Stan Kroenke has all the right to move the team wherever he wants and even good reason too. After all, Los Angeles is the nation’s second largest media market whereas St. Louis is ranked 21 by News Generation, so from a business perspective the move makes sense.

But for many St. Louisans it felt like “a punch in the gut,” according to the Washington Post.

Since the Rams have left and nothing can be done about that, what is next for the once gleaming City of St. Louis when it comes to the world of sports?

There are several options for the city moving forward. The MLS is looking to expand and there are still several NFL teams that are looking for a new home. Possibly the worst outcome would be that nothing comes to St. Louis at all.

According to a poll among sports fans at Lafayette 23 percent would like an NBA team while 26 percent want an MLS team and six percent said some other kind of team. The most prevalent answer however is an NFL team  which was the answer 45 percent of the time.

“I just want the Rams back,” Freidhoff said, but this is obviously not going to happen.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to move however when asked about a possible move to St. Louis Shahid Khan, Jaguars owner, firmly said, “I don’t see that at all, OK?”

Honestly the best chance St. Louis has at another professional sports team is an MLS team, and it is a very real possibility as the MLS essentially challenged us to build a stadium. Unfortunately an MLS team would most certainly mean that the NFL will never return because St. Louis is not large enough to hold four pro teams, so is this really what we want?

I personally do not know but I do know that I want something over nothing, so if it is an MLS team it will have to do.
