LHS Craft Corner: A DIY for ombréing “Tie-Dye Tuesday” T-shirts
Image reporters Emily Altic and McKinzie Duesenberg got together with the presidents of the newly formed Craft Club, Diana Lee and Amber Park, to discuss their first project of dip-dying t-shirts in honor of Homecoming week’s “Tie-Dye Tuesday.”
“It’s a popular trend that we saw on Pinterest… you can ombré any material, even bleach with denim or hair,” Lee said.
Materials: White shirt, fabric dye, large container, boiled water, rubber bands, grocery bags
1. Boil some water or use hot water from the sink and put into a large container.
“This will allow the color to be more pigmented,” Lee said.
2. Put the package of dye into the container.
“Be sure to mix it up thoroughly so all of the powder dissolves, otherwise it will be blotchy,” Park said.
3. Tie a rubber band around the shirt to the point where you would like the ombré to end.
“It will help gauge how far you want your ombré to go,” Park said.
4. Dip the end of the shirt into the bucket first and slowly lower the upper parts in, the parts that sit longer in the dye will become darker creating the ombré effect.
“Dip a third of the shirt in for five minutes, then put in another third for half of that time, then dip the last section in for a brief second,” Lee said.
5. After completing the dip dying process, wring out the remaining dye and place into a plastic bag. Allow it to sit for 6 hours then gently wash.
