Trivia Night has always been a sensational Lafayette tradition, with snacks, silent auctions and school spirit. Though the pandemic briefly interrupted the annual event, Trivia Night made a return last year, raising over $3,000.

However, Trivia Night has been especially notable even far before the pandemic.

“One year, the theme was the Olympics and that was a lot of fun. It also had questions about countries around the world,” Principal Karen Calcaterra said.  

Trivia night is an evening packed with all sorts of fun games and raffles along with the actual trivia in the event. In years like 2017, it has included games like Heads Up Seven Up and Heads or Tails in addition to the auction. Formal Lancer Parent Organization (LPO) president Sarah Robeson said the event is a lot of fun. 

“The whole event is sort of run by the MC [the host and announcer], and in the middle of rounds, there will be small games to play. If you want to participate, you put a dollar in the air and volunteers collect the money, so then you can start with something like Heads or Tails,” Robeson said. 

Parents, teachers and administrators also play a huge role in trivia night. Aside from reserving tables to participate in the event, some teachers are directly involved in creating trivia questions.

“In 2017, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Choate, Ms. Glenn and Mr. Williard were all involved in creating questions. Mr. Choate was the MC for that year as well. He did that for several years,” Robeson said. 

This year, Trivia Night will be Saturday, Feb. 25, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and first question starting at 7 p.m. in the Commons.

The main goal of this fundraiser is to raise money for senior celebrations, similar to the Winter Carnival and Tastes of West County events. Though a sophomore class fundraiser, this year trivia night will be hosted by the junior class. 

“We decided that this year, we will not bring back the Tastes of West County given some of the challenges we have faced with contacting restaurants. We are hoping to bring it back for next year, so this year trivia night will be the junior class fundraiser, and for sophomores, the LPO is planning a Fun Run event,” Robeson said.

The LPO hopes to raise $15,000 from the event. 

Chairpersons of Trivia Night, LaDonna Ellis and Kristin Kilmer, said the total will come from a combination of table sales, games, raffles, concessions and the silent auction.

This year’s theme is Hollywood. Ellis and Kilmer said that the students enjoyed the theme of Hollywood at homecoming and wanted to carry on with that theme.

Ellis and Kilmer suggest taking a look at the options are for raffles before coming into Trivia Nigh, which can be found at on Parent Square. Live bidding begins Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Some raffle items include tickets to events like prom and graduation, sporting events and more.

“On the night of, attendees can bring their own table decorations and food.  We will have light snacks for sale and free water and soda for all.  It is also important to know who their team captain is.  Also brush up on your Hollywood Knowledge for Trivia,” Ellis said.

Ellis and Kilmer said there are going to be some fun categories and fun raffle items people can bid on this year. 

“We have a great MC, and [Vox Solus] performing and some thoughtful and fun question categories for the night.  So many cool items up for raffle as well.  We are really excited about our silent auction that attendees can participate in whether they come in person or are off-site,” Kilmer said.
