Students react to changes in administation
Students express opinions on changes to administrative structure, hallways
August 28, 2015
During the summer, Lafayette underwent a few adjustments in administration. Rather than rotating principals every year and changing halls, students will stay with the principal they had freshman year. Classes of 2016, 2017 and 2018 will stay with the administrator they had last year.
The administration decided to do this based on feedback heard from the 2015 Health Summit. The Health Summit was an event which allowed students, parents and teachers discuss events and issues in school and in the community.
“One of the things we took into consideration, students, parents, and staff, that there was an inability to get to know the kids as deeply when you are working with them for one year,” Associate Principal Karen Calcaterra, said.
A large number of students expressed their disagreement about the changes, namely the stop of hallway rotation.
“You never feel like you move up if you stay in the same hallway,” Laine Stroble, senior, said. Stroble said they were upset that the freshmen were in the old senior hall, rather than the new senior class.
The upperclassmen aren’t the only ones impacted by the change.
“Now the freshmen get the rather large and imposing senior hallway while the rest of us are stuck down in the bottom hallway,” Rohan Bohra , sophomore, said.
In addition, some students were also unhappy with staying with the same assistant principal every year.
“Junior principals would know how to deal with problems juniors would have,” Hannah Geurkink, junior, said.
However, not all students were in disagreement with the changes and some said they could see advantages to the new system.
“I think it is better the principal stays with you for all four years so you get to know them better and then when something happens, you can actually talk to them,” Isaac Meyer, freshman said.
Whatever the reactions are to the changes, only time call tell the outcomes of the adjustments.
