Though March may be drawing to a close, its madness is still going strong.
This is the year of upsets as top teams have been eliminated one-by-one, busting brackets in the process.
More and more teams are being subject to the recurrence of last second shots and lower ranked teams taking over and winning. In the first round of play, #4 Vanderbilt lost to a buzzer shot by #13 seed Murray State. Continuing the trend, #1 Kansas lost to #8 University of Northern Iowa with an unfortunate game of catch-up by Kansas.
But that’s not all. With Maryland up by one, Michigan State chucked up their last hope as the clock ticked down and was awarded a victory. Ivy league Cornell stomped on Big Ten Wisconsin and moved on to the next round.
Highly ranked teams continue to struggle against the underdogs, creating Cinderella stories and memories.
LHS students are also fighting for top positions in their bracket pools as more and more expected champions fall to lower ranked teams.
The upset is now the most unsuspected threat to top teams and brackets. lhsimage.com delves into the world of sports and asks students,
“How’s the tournament so far?”
“The only team I wanted to win was the Florida Gators and since they were out in the very first round, I just don’t care anymore.” -Aliah Ptah, 9
“I hate the buzzer beaters. Pretty much, everyone’s bracket is in the dumps. The only reason I think I might win is the reason I didn’t choose a #1 seed to win.” -Kyle Siebert, 10
“The only upset that has really affected my bracket so far was Kansas losing, but other than that I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to my picks.” -Danielle Slauter, 10
“I put Kansas in the finals, but Duke is still in it. I wasn’t mad about the Jayhawks though because I’m not a KU fan; they always choke and should have seen it coming. I always put upsets so I still have three of the finals four teams. We all know who will win though…DUKE!” -Ashley Hipp, 10
“So far this has been one of the most exciting tournaments to date, especially with Kansas getting knocked off. As for my bracket, you win some and you lose some with your picks.” -Josh Bring, 12
