Five Questions: Alex Norvell
Many high school students look for ways to express themselves. Lafayette offers many classes and clubs to help teens discover things they enjoy. For sophomore Alex Norvell, music and art classes helped him realize something he has a talent and a passion for.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I do a lot of music. After school, I’m pretty much always in the Fine Arts hallway in one place or another. Half of the time it’s in the photo lab and the darkroom, and the other half I’m playing the piano or the flute.
Q: What type of music do you do?
A: Technically, I’m classically trained. I’ve taken AP Music Theory and I can play the flute, and I’m working on the piano a little bit. But recently I’ve been branching out a lot. I’m doing guitar this summer. There’s a lot of jazz theory that I’ve been getting into. I also do some compositions on the side. I’ve uploaded a lot of my stuff online.
Q: Do you publish your music online?
A: Yes. It’s kind of small, with some of my friends. I post generally on SoundCloud. A lot of it’s just instrumental stuff. I don’t really sing.
Q: What type of art do you do?
A: I do a lot of photography, mostly black and white film, specifically. I’m not so much a fan of the digital cameras. I really like the mechanical process of going through and developing your film.
Q: What would be your advice to anyone considering doing art or music?
A: Just go for it. Everyone’s afraid to get into something new, but honestly, you could just pick anything up. Like, if you just take Art Fundamentals, for example, you could find something.
