Out and About: Strange Donuts proves to be strange yet delicious
February 13, 2015
When the doughnut craving comes, there’s nothing you can do about it. You’ve got to have those one dozen delicious doughy pastries with icing and sprinkles.
There’s your typical glazed, chocolate, or sprinkle donuts that you can get at your basic donut shop, but Wednesday morning I was feeling adventurous and decided to take a trip down to Maplewood to try the bizarre donuts of the Strange Donut company.
I entered the extremely tiny shop in downtown Maplewood and was faced with a collection of unique donuts. I’ve been to Strange Donuts before, but the donuts for sale change daily, so every trip is a new experience of a weird yet delicious menu. I bought six of the most peculiar donuts available and returned to my car to eat.
The doughnut to first draw my attention was called Bart’s Revenge: a chocolate cake doughnut with chocolate icing topped with chopped up Butterfinger-esque candies. This option fulfills any chocolate lover’s dream. The mix of textures between the hard candy and the soft donut, along with the peanut butter chocolate deliciousness, makes this my favorite donut from this experience.
The Maple Bacon, however, takes a turn for the strange. It’s a normal cake donut covered with syrup-flavored sauce with bacon acting as sprinkles. I took a bite of this doughnut to find it tasted like a breakfast meal. The smoky bacon flavors contrasting with the sweet syrup flavor equaled perfection.
The gooey butter is any St. Louisans favorite doughnut. The cake part tastes exactly like gooey butter cake, with a delicious cream cheese icing that makes it perfect for anyone who has a sweet tooth.
Another doughnut I tried was the Grasshopper, a chocolate cake with mint icing. It was a refreshing break from all of the sweetness of the other donuts.
I also had a Mexican Hot Chocolate donut, which was the weirdest donut in my opinion. It has a light chocolate flavor with a spicy kick. It left me confused, but it was still delectable.
My least favorite donut was the Jean Claude Van Graham. It was supposed to taste like a graham cracker, but I found it tasted rather plain in comparison to all of the other donuts I had.
Overall, my experience at Strange Donuts was a sweet success, filled with odd yet amazing donuts. I will definitely be returning to try their distinctive menu again.
If you wish to visit Strange Donuts, you can go to their store at at 2709 Sutton Blvd. in Maplewood or their newest location at 107 1/2 E. Argonne in Kirkwood.
