Club Spotlight: Be the Change prepares for Week of Change in April
April 7, 2014
Be the Change is one of Lafayette’s newer clubs, considering its creation was a result of Lafayette’s first Challenge Day in 2012.
A member of the club, junior Alexandria Tate, said the club is about, “helping people and choosing the right thing to do, what are you going to do about [bullying] and acting on the situation, and just helping other people.”
Sandy Schilling-Gal, Special School District teacher, is one of the sponsors of Be the Change.
“Students notice, choose and act regarding issues present in the building, such as stereotypes, bullying, respect, alcohol and drug abuse,” Schilling-Gal said.
Be the Change will be sponsoring Be the Change week April 14-18. During this time, the club members will be making an effort to reach out students in the building who seem isolated, sending out cards with positive messages on them, hold up signs with nice messages on them in front of the school before school starts and hold a bake sale during lunch on April 15.
All profits from the bake sale will go to the Megan Meier Foundation, in honor of Megan Meier, a Missouri student who committed suicide in 2006. Meier’s suicide has been attributed to cyber-bullying, which Be The Change is trying to counteract at Lafayette.
Right now, Schilling-Gal says the clubs has between ten and fifteen regular members who attend the weekly meetings.
“We encourage our members to bring friends so we can have more people to like spread the word around school,” Tate said.
All students are welcome to attend the meetings which are Mondays after school from 3:15-4:00 in Room 124, unless otherwise noted.
