During a time where several high school seniors are busy perfecting their ACT scores or choosing between colleges, senior Kelsey Clayman has signed to play soccer at the prestigious Harvard University.
lhsimage.com asks Clayman what it’s like to face the pressure of deciding your future while holding onto pieces of your pastime.
Q: Why did you choose to play soccer?
A: It’s where I feel at home. If I’m having a good day, I can enjoy playing and passing with a group of friends. If I’m having a bad one, I can go push and shove to take out anger. It’s where I’m comfortable and feel like me.
Q: Why did you choose Harvard?
A: I could only dream to study at Harvard. You grow up thinking “Hahvahd…where the U.S. Presidents go.” So when they offered me a chance to play there, I couldn’t say no. It was a dream come true and you can’t pass up something like that.
How do you balance everything?
A: I’ve been playing since I was 4, so by now I’ve had time to get into a routine. School comes first always, but I’ve never just limited myself to academics. I go to school, go to practice, then have time to be with my family, friends or finish homework. I just get used to my routine and priorities.
Q: What are you most nervous about?
A: I know that academics and sports will take up the bulk of my time, but I’m used to that. So honestly, I’m most worried about the same thing as everyone else: making friends! I’m going to know no one so just going and meeting people will be new and nerve racking.
Q: What are you most excited about?
A: I’m really excited to see such high level soccer. I’m lucky to be coming into a very successful program, so learning and watching talented players is definitely what I look forward to.
