After years of watching her own hairstylists cutting her hair senior Emily Youngberg finally decided to pick up a pair of scissors on her own hair.
“I started [cutting hair] in 7th Grade, but that was just because all the hairstylists I went to never cut my bangs how i wanted them [to be cut]. So I basically started trimming my own bangs.”
After experimenting with her own hair for several years Youngberg said she started to branch out a few years ago and start cutting others’ hair.
She said, “In the past three years I’ve cut my own hair, my three sisters’ hair and other students at Lafayette like [juniors] Maria Schou and Sarah Chapekis.”
Youngberg said that she has become more comfortable with her skills with time and practice, she said, “I learned from experience. I figured out how hair works, as goofy as that sounds, and the way to trim from just plain experience. It’s harder than it looks.”
As for her future in hairstyling Youngberg has decided to keep hair cutting as a hobby for now. “For a while I did plan on going to cosmetology school, but later I decided it wasn’t for me. But as of now, I still do my friends’ hair as well as my own.”
Youngberg concluded, “In my eyes it’s just a hobby, but I love doing it.”
