Hurricane Maria has caused mass devastation to U.S. colony Puerto Rico. Maria made landfall with winds of 155 miles per hour and severely damaged Puerto Rico’s power infrastructure.

“Though Hurricane Maria had dropped from a Category 5 to a Category 4 storm by the time it reached Puerto Rico, it was more than powerful enough to rip apart roads and strip trees as it cut a path across the island,” The New York Times said.

Many of the of the 1.57 million Puerto Rican electricity consumers are left in the dark. Only one of the island’s 68 hospitals is fully operational and 80 percent of Puerto Rico’s agricultural industry is destroyed.

“The official death toll from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico has increased to 34 from 16,” said the Guardian.

The American Red Cross sent 5,000 comfort kits, blankets and clean-up kits to Maria’s victims. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) deployed two AmeriCorps members with specialized training to assist the American Red Cross. Adding to the relief movements, Lafayette’s improv team, Undefined, is holding a fundraiser and silent auction in order to raise money for Puerto Rico.

The Undefined team named this event “Puerto Rico se levanta” which translates to “Puerto Rico will rise” in English.

This cause was important to the Undefined team sponsor Natasha Fischer because her family hails from the island.

“My family has been directly affected by the Hurricane. They’ve had to leave all their assets in Puerto Rico and move to the United States of America. My grandparents are still in Puerto Rico and we cannot communicate with them every day. They have no water, no food and no gas, so it has been a rough few weeks,” Fischer said.

She hopes the people will learn to care for one other and have a sense of unity through this event. She to bring in as many people as possible and to raise as much money for this cause.

Some of the items for the silent auction have been donated by Carlos Martinez, the St. Louis Cardinals pitcher.  There’s also an 8 week Arial class at Elite Performance and artwork from Lyubov Briginets, fine arts department.

The improv show will be held on Monday, Oct. at 7 p.m. in the Theater. The silent auction will be held pre-show and during intermission.

“It’s $5 at the door. There will be silent raffles and a competition among the teacher. The teacher who earns the most will be able to come on stage and participate in one of the skits with the team,” George Reich, a sophomore on Undefined.

A new game will be played where a couple of teachers will have their photos placed on donation containers. The teacher who earns the most money will participate in one of the improv skits.

“It’s a cool way to get the staff involved and everyone to raise some extra money,” Beth Burton, senior Undefined member said.
