The last few weekends have been quite eventful for the Lafayette wrestling program. Two weekends ago they traveled to Columbia, MO to duel in the “Elite Eight” which was the top eight teams in the State wrestling in a round robin style tournament. This past weekend was the District wrestling tournament which the team took second place in.

From this tournament, the squad also saw eight of it’s members qualify for the State tournament. The top performer for the team during the district tournament was Austin Stofer, who took first place in his weight division winning the District championship for his weight class.

Head Coach Jonathan Sumner praised the team for their efforts at the District tournament.

“You always come out of the District tournament wanting more for your kids, but at the end of the day we had a pretty good district tournament, we had a rough semifinals round, but our kids wrestled back from fifth to second. That shows a lot about our character and our kids and they work they put in. We are super proud of them. We have eight kids that are all sitting in paths that are doable for them to attain a state medal, and if they go down and perform they way they should they are all going to be in a position to come home with something. I look forward to seeing what our kids can accomplish this weekend” Sumner said.

The prospects for the Lafayette wrestling program’s first team plaque from the State tournament look good. The wrestlers from this years crop of State qualifiers could make history. The ball is in their court; lets see what they do with it. The State tournament runs Thursday through Friday at the Hearnes Center at Mizzou in Columbia, MO.
