Despite some rough patches in the season, the Water Polo team improved upon their record from last year, going 10-15 in all games.

They started off in a tournament held in Chicago, where they went 1-4 against some good teams. Many of their games were close losses, like 13-11 or 8-7, so the talent on the team was showing.

These flashes of potential kept up throughout the year, despite it not showing up on the score sheet all the time, like against Ladue. The team lost 11-2, but at the same time, we saw an outstanding goalie performance from Alex Mick. In their first game against Marquette, the Lancers were leading by a big margin, so the talent was clearly there, it was just putting it all together into one complete performance by the whole team that was their downfall.

Games throughout the entire Lafayette Invitational were examples of the team’s finest work, where they defeated the Marquette Mustangs who had beaten them earlier in the season, and pushed a top three area ranked team in Parkway West to their absolute limit. In the Parkway West game especially, we saw the state’s top player Mitch Griffin being shut down for the most part by the defense, and far fewer one-on-one breakaways for Mick to have to handle.

There were also some blowouts in the Lancers favor, like against MICDS, where team leader Matt Graves scored four goals and had three assists in the 10-3 lopsided affair.

If it was anything that plagued the Lancers throughout the season, it was inconsistency and overall stamina. Both lead to several breakaways from opposing swimmers, which lead to goals. The lack of stamina was unfortunately present in the team’s final game against Parkway West, where they allowed many one-on-one opportunities and let up 16 goals.

Overall, though the record doesn’t always show it, the team played very well and showed a level of play that can challenge the best of them.
