Henderson wins 1st at girls wrestling tournament, Haefner breaks Lancer record

Weekly Sports Update Jan. 9-15

While facing Marquette Dec. 2, senior Shru Singh dribbles the ball away from the opposing team. Singh helped the girls basketball team get their first win Jan. 12, scoring 21 points against Parkway Central.

Boys Basketball

While at home gym Jan. 10, the boys basketball team went up against Liberty High School and won, 66-57. At the game, senior Matt Haefner broke the Lancer single-game scoring record with 39 points. “Matt had 20 points at Halftime and he continued to stay hot. When it’s your night, it’s your night and Matt did not slow down and had a brilliant performance,” Arvie Kilongkilong, assistant basketball coach, said. The team then lost against Parkway West Jan. 12, 57-43. Their next game will be against Lindbergh High School at home Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. 

Girls Basketball

The Lancers took their first win of the season against Parkway Central Jan. 12, 66-59. Senior Shru Singh led the game with 21 points and senior Destiny Polk and sophomore Taylor Nania were close behind, with 15 and 18 points, respectively. “It was definitely a much needed win to boost our morale,” Singh said. Nania also played well defensively, taking down 13 rebounds during the game. The team will face Rockwood Summit at home Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.


 Though the boys hockey team had no games in the past week, they will be facing Kirkwood Jan. 16 at 7:50 p.m. and Marquette Jan. 20 at 9:50 p.m., both at the Maryville Hockey Center.

Swimming and Diving 

With a strong lead, the girls swimming and diving team beat Marquette 111-75 Jan. 10 at home. They then kept up their winning streak and took 3rd place at the Kirkwood Invitational Jan. 13-14. In the 200 freestyle relay, senior Maddy Prager, junior Ellie Kipper, sophomore Abby Carr and freshman Isabella Clerico took 5th place, and Clerico also took 5th in the 100-butterfly. Prager won 4th place in the 100 breaststroke and also placed 4th in the 200 medley relay along with senior Morgan O’Connell, and juniors Megan Bisland and Taylor Cloutman. Sophomore Lucia Tenny took 3rd in diving and senior Maggie Arceneaux placed 2nd in diving. Then Cloutman took 2nd place in the 500 freestyle and Bisland went home a champion with 1st place in the 100 backstroke. The team has a busy week this week, with two away meets and one at home against Parkway West Jan. 19 at 4:15 p.m.

Girls Wrestling

On Jan. 11, the girls wrestling team defeated Edwardsville, 47-16. They continued their winning streak at the Sherri Lance Varsity Tournament Jan. 13 finishing 4th as a team. Individually, senior Dashiya Houston and sophomore Ashlee Dakin placed 5th, freshman Layla Gardner placed 4th, sophomore Aaliyah Grammer took 3rd place, senior Jayla Jones and junior Toby Goertz placed 2nd and sophomore Hannah Henderson went home a champion in her division. The team will travel to Seckman Jan. 18 and then head to Washington for the Iron Jay Tournament Jan. 20. 

Boys Wrestling

The boys wrestling team beat Edwardsville High Jan. 12, 40-30. While facing Edwardsville, junior Andrew Wier accomplished his 100th varsity win. The team will travel to Seckman High Jan. 15 and then head out of town for the weekend to attend the Winnetonka Invitational.
