Boys basketball wins tournament and builds momentum, wrestling prepares to host tournament

The boys basketball team won the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament at Maryville University. They were the 13th seed going into the tournament. After their victory, Head Coach Bryan Keim said, “I’m extremely proud of these guys. They keep believing in each other and play for each other. They are so much fun to coach.”

Boys Basketball

Over Winter Break, the Lancers won the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament at Maryville University as the 13th seed. On Dec. 27, they beat fourth seed Troy Buchanan in the first round, 47-45. In the quarterfinals, Dec. 28, the Lancers beat 12th seed Eureka, 53-47. Taking down the first seed, The Lancers beat De Smet 54-49 in the semis Dec. 29. To win the tournament, the Lancers defeated second seed Hickman, 48-38 Dec. 30. Seniors Matt Haefner and Logan Minton were named to the All-Tournament Team. Head Coach Brian Keim said, “I think people call [our win] an upset based on our record and where we were seeded for the tournament. In our opinion, we are better than our record indicates and we got to show that this week. Winning the tournament definitely helps build momentum from a rough start to the year.” After their tournament victory, the Lancers overall record stands at 5-6. The Lancers will face Kirkwood on Jan. 3, at Kirkwood. Their next home game is Jan. 10.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Lancers competed at the Don Maurer Holiday Invitational at MICDS as the eighth seed. They fell to number one seed Marquette, 71-26 Dec. 27. On Dec. 28, they lost to MICDS, 44-19. To end the tournament, they lost 37-33 to Ladue Dec. 30. Their record stands at 0-11. They face Kirkwood on Jan. 6.


On Jan. 26, the Lancers fell to Vianney, 4-2. After they lost, they tied twice over the holiday break. On Dec. 29, they tied Edwardsville 1-1. With the tie against Edwardsville, their record stands at 2-12-3. To start the new year, they tied 2-2 against Rockwood Summit on Jan. 1.

Girls Swimming

The Lady Lancers will clash with Ladue on Jan. 3, at home.

Boys Wrestling

Boys wrestling placed fifth at the 61st Red Schmitt Holiday Tournament in Granite City. THe meet consisted of 27 teams. Top finishers included juniors Andrew Wier, 2nd place; Dylan Roth, 3rd place; sophomore Aidan Schoen 4th place; and freshman Caum Brown, 5th place. On Jan. 7, the Lancers will host the Fred Ross Invitational, which is named after former Lafayette wrestling coach, Fred Ross.

Girls Wrestling

On Dec. 30, the Lady Lancers traveled to Battle High School for the Wonder Woman Tournament. They placed 10th out of 84 teams. Seniors Dashiya Houston, Jayla Jones and sophomore Hannah Henderson placed sixth and sophomore Aaliyah Grammer placed eighth.
