Boys water polo beats Marquette in OT to take first at MICDS Tournament; boys LAX continues winning streak

Weekly Sports Update April 4-April 9

Senior Nikolas Malek participates in a relay. The Lancers were largely successful during the relays of the Northwest Invitational, taking a top ten spot in all relay events.


The Lancers came back and won, 12-10 against Lindbergh scoring five runs in the seventh inning April 5. The team faced Lindbergh again April 6 and beat them, 11-8. The Lancers  took on SLUH April 7 and fell, 8-3. The Lancers also lost, 6-2 to St. Dominic April 8. The Lancers had a doubleheader April 9, beating De Smet, 11-9 and edging out Westminster, 8-7. The Lancers play next against Marquette April 12 at 4:30 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse
The Lancers were victorious in both of their games after beating Pattonville, 16-7, on April 6, and defeating Kirkwood, 16-1, on April 8. Junior Natalie Tomljenovic was the top scorer in both games, scoring six against Pattonville and four against Kirkwood. The Lancers record stands at 2-1, with two home games scheduled in the upcoming week. On April 11, they host Marquette, and April 15, they will play against Memphis Hutchinson, a traveling team from Tennessee.

Boys Lacrosse
The Lancers played Parkway West April 5, winning, 16-5. Junior Cole Ohlmes found the back of the net four times for the Lancers. Continuing their winning streak, the Lancers faced the Holt Indians April 7, beating them, 14-10. With a strong start to the season, the Lancers have a 5-1 season record. Kicking off the week April 11, the Lancers will face Seckman. In a game later in the week, the boys will face De Smet April 14.

Boys Golf
The Lancers faced off against Kirkwood April 5 and won, 238-253. Sophomore Reid Fortel had a score 38 and was two over par. The Lancers then participated in the Farmington Invitational April 6 and finished in fourth overall. Senior Kyle Rinkenberger finished in third place individually.

Girls Soccer
The Lancers had an impressive week starting off at home April 5. Welcoming Lindbergh, the girls dominated the Flyers, 6-0. Senior Rylee Howard scored three goals, sophomore Emily Derucki had two goals and senior Ana McClellan had one goal. Senior Anya Shawke also had an assist. So far, the Lindbergh game has been the Lancers’ best game, but they continued to prevail, winning another game against Timberland April 8, 4-0. Howard also led the offense with two goals, accounting for eight of the team goals so far in the season. Derucki and sophomore Hailey Schwinger also each scored one, with additional assists from Howard, seniors Mikayla Morales and Taylor Stith and junior Claire Scerba. The Lancers have a busy week facing St. Dominic at home April 11, Oakville at home April 13, Kirkwood away on April 14 and then they wrap up the week in the Parkway Showcase Games at Lou Fusz April 15-16.

Girls Track and Field
The Lancers participated in the Northwest Invitational April 9 and finished in third overall. In the 4×800-meter relay, freshman Avery Brown, sophomore Natalie Barnard and juniors Elissa Barnard and Grace Tyson finished first with a new meet record of 9:42.37. In the 100-meter run, senior Page Halter finished in third. In the 800-meter medley relay, juniors Kaliyah Saddler and Melissa White and Shru Singh and senior Jordan Moulton finished in fifth with a time of 2:02.83. In the 4×100-meter relay, Saddler, White and seniors Erica Shelton and Halter finished in fifth with a time of 53.54. In the 400-meter run, junior Faith Halter finished in third place and freshman Lauren Pauls finished in fourth place. In the 800-meter run, Tyson finished in first place. In the 200-meter run, Brown took first place. In the 3200-meter run, Elissa Barnard finished in first. Natalie Barnard finished in second . In the 4×400 medley relay, Pauls, Faith Halter, Moulton and Singh finished in third place with a time of 4:25.83. Sophomore Maya Witherspoon placed third in triple jump.

Boys Track and Field
In the Northwest Invitational April 9, the Lancers placed first overall. In the 4×800-meter relay, junior Brycen Compton and seniors Bross Miller, Samuel Aven and Nikolas Malek finished in first with a time of 8:19.58. In the 110-meter hurdle, senior Euan Brodie placed fourth. In the 100-meter run, senior Alexander Wildt finished in second. In the 800-meter medley relay, the boys placed second with a time of 1:42.36. In the 1500-meter run, Miller finished in second place. In the 400-meter run, Compton placed third place. In the 300-meter hurdle, sophomore Isaac Jovceski placed fourth. In the 800-meter run, Malek placed first and Aven finished in third. In the 200-meter run, Wildt finished in first place. In the 3200-meter run, junior Lukas Groenewald placed second. In the 4×400 relay, Aven, Malek, Wildt and junior Marshall Ems finished in third place with a time of 3:34.32. In the long jump, Jovceski placed fourth. In the discus throw, junior Jeremey Lewis placed fifth. In the javelin throw, senior Tucker Ryan finished in second place and senior Landon Oelschlaeger tied for third place.

Boys Tennis
The Lancers took on Rockwood Summit and won, 8-1, April 5. The team then took on Lindbergh and lost, 7-2. The Lancers next take on Ladue April 12 at 4:15 p.m.

Boys Volleyball
The Lancers faced off against the Kirkwood Pioneers April 5. The Lancers beat them in four sets, winning three out of the four sets.  Sophomore Clay Carmon had a strong showing in the match, scoring nine points. The next day, the Lancers went up against the De Smet Spartans April 6, losing to the Spartans in all three sets. In the last game of the week, the team took on the Mehlville Panthers April 7, and lost in all three sets. The Lancers will host the Borgia Knights on April 13.

Girls Water Polo
On April 7, the Lancers lost to Oakville, 17-5. Next up was the Lafayette Tournament April 8-9. The Lancers opened the tournament by beating Parkway West, 14-4. Continuing their winning streak, the team defeated Andrew JV, 15-1. After winning the first two rounds, the Lancers fell to Oakville 11-4 in the third round. In the final round, the girls kept up a battle against Marquette but lost 10-6. Next, the Lady Lancers will face Parkway North April 14 at home at 6:30 p.m.

Boys Water Polo
The Lancers won the MICDS Invitational April 9 with a win over Marquette, 9-8. Senior Dylan Vorbeck scored 19 goals overall in the tournament. Junior Oscar Downey, who primarily plays goalie, scored five goals over the tournament. Vorbeck scored four goals in the game, including the game-winner.  The Lancers are now 9-6 for the season. They play at home April 11 at 6:30 pm against De Smet.
