Lafayette basketball gain their first win in District tournaments; Boys wrestling advances to State

Boys basketball: The Lancers finished the regular season this week with two regular season games. On Feb. 22, the Lancers beat Ritenour 56-47. Their final regular-season game was on Feb. 23 against Francis Howell Central, where they lost 46-32. The Lancers struggled to score effectively, scoring less than 10 points in three of the four quarters. Sophomore Matt Haefner led the team by a large margin in points finishing with 13. The second closest were junior Matt Jones and sophomore Logan Minton both finishing with four points. The team capped off its regular season a game below .500 finishing with a record of 12-13.In the first round of Districts, Lafayette played Parkway South at home on Feb. 27. After already beating them earlier this season, the Lancers once again took down the Patriots with a final score of 83-64. Four Lancers finished with 10 or more points with senior Aidan Rosen-McGinnis coming out on top with a total of 15. The team now looks to extend the season as they travel to Eureka on March 2 for the second game of the tournament. 

Boys wrestling: After the Sectional competition, Lafayette will be sending six wrestlers to State , with each of them having finished in the top three of their individual weight classes. Freshman Dylan Roth and junior Lane Tenny finished third. Seniors Evan Boren and Joel Mylin and junior Drew Doehring all finished second. Junior Tommy Hagan was the Sectional champion in the 182-pound weight class. The State tournament will be March 10 and will feature different weight classes each day until March 13. 

Girls basketball: On Feb 22. the Lady Lancers had a decisive win over Parkway Central, 45-27. For the final game of the regular season on Feb.23, the Lady Lancers lost to Francis Howell Central, 46-35, but they finished the season with a 14-10 record. To start off the District tournament, the girls played Parkway West on Feb.27. Shooting well from behind the arch, the team finished with 46%  of the points from three. Senior Brynn Roach and junior Andrya Roach led the team in points finishing with a combined 25 and were responsible for making every three in the game. Lafayette earned their first playoff win with a score of 42-29. Their next game will be on March 1 at 6 p.m. against Marquette.

Hockey: The Lancers faced off against CBC in the Challenge Cup semi-finals. After a tough 4-1 loss in game one, the Lancers dropped the second game 5-0 on Feb. 27 ending their season. CBC came out fast after scoring the first goal only two minutes and 18 seconds into the contest. After the first period, CBC kept on putting on the pressure and opened up the score 4-0 in just the second period.
