During the first Undefined practice of the year, Undefined captain, senior Keira Makalintal, plays an improv game. Makalintal and senior Luke Tipton became Undefined captains to develop their skills. “I prioritize experiences that are enriching for me,” Makalintal said.

The first Undefined show of the year will be Sept. 15 in the Theater. There will be two shows, one at 3:45 p.m., costing $3 per ticket, and the other at 7 p.m., costing $5 per ticket.

Seniors Luke Tipton and Keira Makalintal are the new captains of Undefined, Lafayettte’s improv group. Both of them decided to give up marching band to become captains.

“I wanted to do Speech and Debate this year too,” Makalintal said. “But I can’t do that because that conflicts with our show schedules.”

Tipton had the same problem.

“When I was told that I was going to be a captain, [I knew] if I want[ed] to do this I had to quit marching band,” Tipton said.

They both chose Undefined.

“It was really sad to see my friends go to marching band,” Tipton said.

However, with improv and classwork, band was something Tipton couldn’t afford to take on.

“I do miss marching band, but there’s just not enough time,” Tipton said. ““I just liked [Undefined] more.”

Tipton also sought out the opportunity for more personal growth.

“I got a chance to host the year before, but I felt like I wasn’t very good at it and I was not confident.” Tipton said. “I was like, ‘OK, hopefully I’ll learn how to do this better.’”

Makalintal agreed.

“Marching band was really fun. It was a great outlet for me to express my musicianship,” Makalintal said. “I just feel like this opportunity [with Undefined] had more space for me to grow as a person and as a leader. Whereas doing another year of marching band, I would have had a lot of fun, but I probably would have remained stagnant in that aspect.”

Makalintal said becoming captain has developed her leadership and confidence.

“Improv takes a certain amount of security and confidence for you to feel good doing it,” Makalintal said. “I have to prioritize things that help me grow as a character and help me help fulfill me rather than things I just like to do because then I would stay in my comfort zone all the time.”

In addition to having new captains, Undefined has a new sponsor this year, drama teacher Michael Swindle.
